Happy Hot Weather and Rain!
The Dayton area is heating up while keeping the rivers full of water. The summer smallmouth bite is in full swing and I have been guiding almost weekly. Morning and evening bites are the best. Too much sun in the eyes of the bass really pushes them down in the deeper water. Currently I am primarily focused on smallmouth and largemouth fishing. The Stillwater, Lower Mad River, and the Great Miami Rivers are my targets. During these hotter months, I do not guide Mad River trout as it could lead to fish kills.
Focus in on riffles and oxygenated water with some deep structure water near. A handful of recent smallmouth landed had small crayfish in their mouths. Topwater is slowly kicking in gear in the late evening time. Hit me up if you have any questions where to go, or if you are looking for a instructional half day to get your summer smallie bite started. I have also been guiding clients on local ponds for largemouth. Stay cool and enjoy the longer days.
